Peppermint is one of my favorite essential oils to take to the gym. I breath it deeply in before starting my workout to clear away the cobwebs and feel energized. Just rub a couple of drops into your palms, cup your hands over your nose and inhale deeply. Just make sure that you wash your hands afterward as you don’t want to mistakenly rub your eyes.

After my workout, I apply my peppermint essential oil topically to cool down tired and strained muscles to help avoid injuries. It would be wise to test for skin sensitivity first before applying liberally. Rub a drop on the underside of an arm and if you feel any sensitivity, then it’s highly recommended to use an organic carrier oil to help dilute the strength of the peppermint oil when applying elsewhere.

In a study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition peppermint essential oil has been shown to remarkably boost physical performance. The study was conducted by Professor Abbas Meamarbashi at the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili in Iran. Over a 10 day consecutive period, twelve healthy young male volunteers drank a bottle of mineral oil containing .05 ml peppermint essential oil. (This equates to only a drop or two!) Afterwards their athletic performance demonstrated increased improvement. The full study included testing isometric grip force, vertical and long jumps, lung and breathing function, blood pressure and heart rates both before and after their ingestion of peppermint essential oil.

The results of the study were quite significant as the performance of the test subjects was remarkably improved. After consuming the peppermint, there was a 36.1% increase in the grip force test, a 7% increase in the standing long jump and a 6.4% increase in the standing long jump. Overall there were improvements in respiratory function, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory gas exchange as well as overall exercise improvement. It was also found that the resting heart rate and blood pressure were reduced.

The study participants increased the amount of total work performed by an incredible 51% while it took 25% longer for them to reach levels of extreme fatigue. In other words, the peppermint essential oil helped them go much further at a faster rate of speed!

The student volunteers also took part in an audio and visual reaction time study by pressing a key when either beeping sounds were heard or boxes appeared on a monitor screen. After ingesting peppermint, the visual reaction time was significantly decreased by 10.1% after five minutes and by 11.8% after one hour, while the audio reaction time was reduced by 17.1% after five minutes and an impressive 20.5% after one hour.

So why would you want to invest in Young Living Peppermint Essential Oil for your workout? Inhale it to feel alert and energized. Apply to muscles to alleviate sore muscles and injuries. Add a couple of drops to your water bottle to boost your stamina, increase your speed and reaction time while improving breathing and cardiovascular performance.
